China is by far the world's largest glass producer, and a competitive source of float glass and processed glass for Europe. It is also the origin most exposed to EU trade-defence action in the glass sector.
The panel below pulls the latest official figures from Eurostat: how many tonnes of float glass the EU imported from China in the most recent reported month, the total value, the implied customs unit value in euros per tonne (a declared trade average, not a spot price), the year-on-year change, and China's share of all the flat glass the EU imports from outside the bloc.
Why the tariff matters here
China has no trade agreement with the EU, so Chinese float glass enters at the standard 4.9% most-favoured-nation duty — unlike Turkish glass, which enters at 0% under the customs union. Beyond the base tariff, the EU maintains anti-dumping / countervailing measures on some Chinese glass products, notably solar glass and glass-fibre materials, which can add substantial duty for those specific goods. That is why the exact product classification and any measure matter as much as the headline price. Confirm the legal rate and any measure for a specific 10-digit code in the EU's official TARIC database.
