A dated decision context for polyethylene and polypropylene: energy and FX references, Extra-EU customs unit values, downstream industrial-production proxies and verified supply events, kept separate by source and frequency.PE & PP decision context combining energy, FX, trade, demand and supply.

Current finding · June 2026 trade monthEvidence confidence: medium
PE and PP customs values rose together, but the signal is not a current quote
Extra-EU import unit values were €1,351/t for PE, up 25.7% year on year, and €1,452/t for PP, up 26.4%. The shared direction makes the movement worth testing against supplier quotes, yet neither customs average establishes today’s grade-specific market price.
Observed
June import values and net mass from Eurostat Comext produced higher year-on-year unit values for both HS 3901 and HS 3902.
Not established
The data cannot isolate grade, contract term, freight mix or the cause of the change. It is not a forecast.
Source: Eurostat Comext, EU27 extra-EU trade, HS 3901 and HS 3902, June 2026, retrieved through MatQuo’s live source pipeline on 4 September 2026. Unit value = declared trade value ÷ net mass. Monthly detailed trade can be revised.
How to read the pulse
Start with the date and scope on each signal. Energy and currencies can change daily; Eurostat trade and industrial-production records arrive later and may be revised. MatQuo therefore does not blend the values into a single synthetic price. The pulse shows whether independent inputs point in the same direction and names the evidence behind each one.
What the pulse can and cannot tell you
A rising customs unit value can support a discussion about the average value of recent EU import flows, but it cannot identify today’s executable PE or PP price. A demand proxy describes activity in polymer-consuming sectors, not measured resin consumption. A supply-risk state requires verified events; no detected event is reported as insufficient evidence rather than proof of normal supply.
Two evidence layers. MatQuo combines official data (reliable, slower-moving evidence) and MatQuo interpretation for PE/PP buyers and sellers.
EIA — U.S. Energy Information Administration official spot prices (Brent, WTI, Henry Hub gas). Public domain. Daily, typically 3–5 days behind. Used as official reference, not as a live price.
ECB — European Central Bank euro reference rates (EUR/USD). Published once each business day.
Eurostat COMEXT — EU trade. PE/PP figures are the customs import unit value (value ÷ net mass) — an implied unit value, not a spot or contract price. Monthly, ~2-month lag.
Market Pulse — a directional read (Rising / Falling / Stable / Mixed) built only from the indicators above, each shown with its source and date. It is not a price assessment or forecast, and mixes no incompatible frequencies silently.
Industrial Demand Pulse — a downstream-demand proxy, not real polymer demand. Built from official Eurostat industrial-production indices (production volume, 2021=100, seasonally & calendar adjusted, EU27) for the sectors that consume the most PE/PP: total manufacturing (NACE C), rubber & plastic products (C22), motor vehicles (C29) and construction (F). The overall signal is a deterministic vote on each component's year-on-year change (sub-0.8% moves treated as flat; disagreement shows as Mixed). Datasets: sts_inpr_m, sts_copr_m. Monthly, ~2-month lag.
Supply Risk — a structured, event-driven indicator, not news sentiment. The categorical signal (Normal / Watch / Elevated / High) is derived only from human-verified structured events (cracker/PE/PP/refinery outages, force majeure, feedstock, logistics, etc.), scored by PE/PP relevance, EU exposure, planned-vs-unplanned and severity, with a separate source-quality Confidence. With no verified events it reads Insufficient Data — never "Normal": absence of detected news does not mean supply is trouble-free. GDELT headlines are shown only as clearly-labelled unverified candidates and never move the signal.
