How flat glass weight is calculated

Sheet weight = width × height × thickness × density (metres and kg/m³). Standard soda-lime float glass has a density of about 2500 kg/m³, which is why glaziers use the rule of thumb ≈2.5 kg per m² per millimetre of thickness — so 4 mm ≈ 10 kg/m², 6 mm ≈ 15 kg/m². Multiply by quantity for the pack or order weight, which feeds the pallet and freight plans. Coatings, laminated interlayers and toughening change the figure slightly; for the production carbon footprint of flat glass see the environmental impact calculator (producer EPDs, per m²).

FAQ

How much does 4 mm glass weigh per m²?

About 10 kg/m² (0.004 m × 2500 kg/m³). Each extra millimetre adds ≈2.5 kg/m².
