Lightweighting Calculator

Switching a product to a lighter material or a lower unit weight? Estimate the mass, production CO₂ and freight CO₂ difference across your production run. You supply both functional-equivalent unit weights — MatQuo never invents a substitution ratio.

How lightweighting impact is calculated

Total mass = unit weight × units. Production CO₂ = mass × the verified cradle-to-gate factor for each material. Freight CO₂ uses the same tonne-kilometre method and factors as the Freight CO₂ calculator. The result is the difference (alternative − current) in mass, production CO₂, freight CO₂ and the combined estimate. When the two materials use different LCA methods or boundaries, MatQuo shows the caveat; it does not hide the methodological difference behind a single saving figure. You must enter both unit weights — the functional equivalence (does the lighter design do the same job?) is an engineering judgement MatQuo will not assume.
