Margin vs markup

Markup is profit over cost; margin is profit over selling price. They describe the same deal from two ends, and markup is always the bigger number. Buy at €1,000, sell at €1,250 → €250 profit = 25% markup but 20% margin. Price to a target margin with: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).

FAQ

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Markup = profit ÷ cost; margin = profit ÷ selling price. Same deal, markup is the higher figure.

How do you price to a target margin?

Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − target margin). For 20% margin on €100 cost: 100 ÷ 0.8 = €125.
