Multilayer Film Masterbatch Calculator

Per-layer mass from thickness × area × density, masterbatch per layer, and material cost — for blown and cast film up to 7 layers.

Area = width × length. Leave total thickness blank to use the sum of the layers, or enter a target and MatQuo checks the layers add up.

Whole film

Method

area = width × length. For each layer: volume = area × thickness, mass = volume × density, MB = mass × MB%, base = mass − MB. Film totals sum the layers. SI conversions: µm→m ×10⁻⁶, g/cm³→kg/m³ ×1000.

Why density matters (the key point)

A 50 µm layer of LDPE at 0.920 g/cm³ and a 50 µm mineral-filled layer at 1.20 g/cm³ have the same thickness but different mass — about 30% more mass in the filled layer. Splitting film mass by thickness percentage alone is wrong; MatQuo drives every layer's mass from density. This is what makes masterbatch and cost figures for the film realistic.

Assumptions & limitations

One masterbatch per layer in this version (architected to extend to several). No process losses, neck-in, edge trim or gauge variation — add your own overage. Masterbatch %, densities and prices are user-entered.

Computed by the shared MatQuo masterbatch engine (/tools/mb-engine.js).
