Polymer Blend Density Calculator

Estimate the density of a blend or masterbatch compound from component densities and weight percentages. Add up to four components; leave a row blank to ignore it.

Formula

1 / ρ_mix = Σ ( wᵢ / ρᵢ )  where wᵢ are mass fractions (normalised to sum 1) and ρᵢ are component densities. Volume fraction of each component = (wᵢ/ρᵢ) / Σ(wⱼ/ρⱼ).

Estimated blend density assuming additive volumes and no significant contraction or expansion on mixing. Real compounds with fillers, voids or strong interactions can deviate; treat this as a planning estimate, not a measured value.

Why weight % and density both matter

3 wt% of a 1.20 g/cm³ masterbatch in a 0.920 g/cm³ polyethylene occupies only ~2.3% of the volume, and lifts the blend density to about 0.926 g/cm³ — a plain average of the densities would get this wrong. This is the same effect that makes layer mass depend on density in the multilayer film calculator.
