European road trailers: sizes and payload

European trailer selection depends on access, cargo form and the actual vehicle combination. Curtainsiders and box trailers suit different loading operations; silo, moving-floor and tipper equipment serve other cargo systems. Use named-model dimensions for geometry, but enter a separately confirmed cargo allowance instead of treating a technical trailer rating as legal road payload.

Distinguish internal space and access

The KRONE Profi Liner example provides 13,620 mm internal length and 2,480 mm internal width. The named Dry Liner example adds a 2,715 mm inside height but a 2,650 mm rear opening height. A load can fit the body while failing its entrance. Side access also does not remove the need for a suitable securing plan.

Confirm the complete vehicle and route

The truck tool asks for an allowable cargo mass already checked for the tractor, trailer, route and operating conditions. No single EU-wide payload or axle limit is assumed. Moving-floor dimensions vary by builder; silo and tipper volume ranges identify manufacturer families, not a universal mass capacity.

Worked example

Fictional floor plan: 13,600 × 2,480 mm with 1,200 × 800 mm pallets and zero clearance. One uniform orientation gives 11 × 3 = 33 positions; the other gives 17 × 2 = 34. At 525 kg gross per pallet and a confirmed 16,000 kg allowance, mass limits the load to 30 pallets, or 15,750 kg. The truck calculator shows both constraints.

Common mistakes

  • Advertising 34 positions as a guaranteed practical loading plan.
  • Using zero clearance without labelling the result theoretical.
  • Equating a trailer manufacturer’s technical payload with the route’s legal cargo allowance.

Questions and answers

Why can the arithmetic show thirty-four Euro pallets?

With the fictional dimensions and zero clearance, rotating a 1,200 by 800 mm footprint gives seventeen rows of two pallets. That is a uniform geometric result. Real tolerances, door access, loading sequence and securing can reduce usable positions, so the calculation must not be presented as a guaranteed operational capacity.

What cargo allowance should I enter?

Enter the mass available for all cargo and its packaging after the actual vehicle and route have been checked. Include pallets, bags and other restraints in the cargo weight. If the allowance is unknown, obtain it from the responsible transport operator instead of using a generic legal payload taken from a different vehicle.

Can the tool verify axle distribution?

No. It compares rectangular positions and total cargo mass. Axle distribution depends on the actual vehicle geometry, load placement and operating limits, which this tool does not model. Use the result as an initial quantity screen and obtain a separate loading and securing assessment for the intended vehicle combination and route.
